ESCAPISM
"Escapism is a mental diversion or "escape" from the perceived unpleasant or banal aspects of daily life.”
With nine new works, Chinyere Akachukwu’s return to the scene further explores “self in society”. She had, in previous works, explored themes of individualistic issues in society from her perspective. In Escapism, she takes 'self in society' to another level by incorporating bold strokes and colours, marking her signature expressionism style with hints of surrealism influences. In this body of work are mixtures of figurative, surrealism, and expressionism styles of painting.
The works tell a story about the dark side of societal conformity (the cause), the inevitable self-exhaustion that comes with it (the effect) and the eventual coping mechanisms of imagination that the artist employs such as reliving of past childhood experiences (the solution).
